DREXEL UNIVERSITY

Drexel University was founded in 1891 as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry by Philadelphia financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel to provide educational opportunities in the “practical arts and sciences” for women and men of all backgrounds. The Drexel Institute of Technology gained university status in 1970, becoming Drexel University. On July 1, 2002, Drexel entered a new era as Philadelphia’s technological leader in health sciences education, when the University was officially united with the former MCP Hahnemann University.

Drexel Co-op - One of the oldest and most expansive co-operative education programs in the world, students can gain up to 18 months of résumé-enhancing experience by graduation. More than 3,000 undergraduate students are currently employed by 1,500 Drexel Co-op employers located in 42 states and 20 international locations.

LOCATION - The Greater Philadelphia / South Jersey metropolitan area's population is 5,116,830. It is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States, ranking behind New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

CONFERENCE LAYOUT - The Colonial Athletic Association has a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The CAA has presence in five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas (New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta).

EXPOSURE

TELEVISION The men’s basketball team was televised a record 15 times.  The Dragons were seen on at least five different networks.  CN8 showed seven regular season games, while Comcast SportsNet had two games televised. The Dragons also played one regular-season game and one post-season game on ESPNU and one on ESPN360. Drexel had its BracketBuster game shown live on ESPN2 on Saturday, Feb. 17.  The 2007 CAA Tournament quarterfinals and semifinals were televised on CN8.

RADIO – Both the men & women’s basketball teams can be heard live on one of the strongest radio signals in Philadelphia, the 50,000 watt WNTP 990 AM or its sister station WFIL 560 AM. All radio broadcast are also available through webcast on the Drexel Athletics webpage, www.drexeldragons.com.

CAMPUS –  There are 12,500 undergraduate students, 6,000 graduate students.

The DAC – Known as one of the hardest arena’s to play at in the CAA because of the student section known throughout the conference as the DAC PACK.

Vidas Athletic Complex –  In 2003 the first phase of renovations were completed with the dedication of Vidas Field, a new 1000 seat bleachers, donor recognition-brick walkways, complete restorations of the tennis courts, an overhaul to the softball complex, two new state-of-the-art scoreboards, and renovation of the Kopp Lounge. 

In the Fall of 2005 the Vidas Athletic Complex renovations were completed.  The addition of a lighted artificial turf field and new scoreboard on the upper field (Buckley Field) for field hockey and practices and the lower field with field turf (Vidas Field) for men’s & women’s lacrosse and men’s & women’s soccer will help Drexel athletic programs position themselves competitively and recruit outstanding student-athletes.
